After only a month’s honeymoon, Clifford is sent to war, and returns paralyzed from the waist down, impotent.  Although Clifford does go on to become a successful writer and popular intellectual, his obsessions of money, fame and wealth turn his wife from him as she longs for real human contact and true feelings; attributes which she finds in the estate’s gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors.
