Based upon Tim O’Brien’s experiences in Vietnam, Combat Zone is a prequel to his award-winning collection of stories, The Things They Carried. It follows O’Brien from the time he’s drafted, through his basic training (at nearby Fort Lewis), and on into combat in the jungles of Vietnam.
