Published in 1962, Travels with Charley chronicles Steinbeck’s coast-to-coast journey across America with his middle-aged standard poodle, Charley. Set during the fall of 1960, the trip takes place at a time when super highways are just starting to connect both coasts and gas costs 31 cents a gallon.
